René Heredia: The “Godfather of Flamenco”.
René Heredia is widely recognized as one of the foremost flamenco guitarists in the vibrant Denver area and its surrounding regions, where he has successfully showcased his exceptional talent both as a solo guitarist and as a sought-after guest artist in various performances. Over the years, his significant contributions and substantial influence in the flamenco art form within the artistic community have earned him the esteemed nickname “The Godfather of Flamenco.” He has recorded multiple albums that beautifully highlight his skillful artistry and deep passion for the rich tradition of flamenco music. In addition to his recordings, he has produced a number of award-winning shows, most notably with his company, Flamenco Fantasy Dance Theatre, which had enjoyed a successful run from 1968 to 2021. His remarkable and captivating performances have taken him around the globe, earning him numerous accolades and deep appreciation from audiences everywhere. He is celebrated not only by local dignitaries from the Denver Mayor and Governor, as well as patrons like Lawrence Phipps III (former owner of what is now Highlands Ranch, Colorado), but also by notable television personalities, heads of state, and even royalty.
In 1968, René introduced the authentic sounds and sights of flamenco to the Denver region by establishing the Flamenco Center for Guitar and Dance. His dedication to preserving the essence of this vibrant art form allowed students to immerse themselves in both classical and flamenco guitar as well as Spanish and flamenco dance in the true gypsy style. Through his teaching, René not only enriched the local cultural landscape but also fostered a deep appreciation for the intricate rhythms, passionate melodies, and expressive movements that define flamenco, creating a lasting legacy in the community.
In 2021, Maestro Heredia made the significant decision to retire from teaching flamenco dance, but his impressive legacy continues to thrive through his talented niece, Andréana Cortés. She carries forward the rich traditions and techniques imparted through the legacy of La Familia Heredia. For those interested in exploring this vibrant art form, be sure to visit the Colorado Institute of Flamenco, where you can participate in a variety of offerings including group flamenco dance classes, group flamenco guitar sessions, and cante classes.
Maestro Heredia is a direct descendant of the “gitano flamenco puro” traditions as passed down to him by generations of his Gypsy family which hail directly from Granada, Spain. His father, a pure Spanish Gypsy, taught his impressionable young son the intricacies and elegance of the rich form of expression. Everything he learned about the flamenco art, its history, and the people was passed on to him by his father, and later instilled by his mentors, Carlos Montoya and “El Rey de Flamenco,” Sabicas, flamenco guitar virtuoso. As a performer, teacher, choreographer, mentor, and recording artist, Maestro Heredia is credited with bringing flamenco to Colorado and has received numerous awards, including the Governor’s and Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts.
